MY FAIR LADY
TheNew London Barn Playhouse: 2008

My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story follows Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a lady. Higgins takes credit for Eliza's success, but she realizes that she can now be independent and does not need him.

In order to allow for quick scene changes, while retaining the elegance of the art nouveau style, I devised a unit set that could serve for many different locales. Sections of a paneled wall upstage spin around to reveal elements of the various, different locations. Similarly, I created massive marbled pillars, that indicate the exterior of Tottenham court, then swivel to reveal the richly appointed study of Professor Higgins.
